At Prairie Rose Veterinary Services emergency care will be provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to clients of Prairie Rose Veterinary Services.

If you have an after-hours emergency, or if you are not sure if your animal can wait until regular business hours, please call (780) 592-VETS (8387) and listen to the prompts on the answering machine. Please do not call with general information inquiries that can be handled during regular business hours.

If you do not get through to the veterinarian, please leave a clear message with your number, as they are likely busy with another client and will contact you as soon as possible.

Below are examples of conditions that qualify as a veterinary emergency. This is not a complete list. If you think you may have an emergency it is better to call then to wait.

Large Animal
  • Calving / Foaling Difficulties
  • Calf Scours where sunken eye and no suck reflex
  • Colic
  • Inability to urinate
  • Non weight bearing lameness/broken legs
  • Uterine Prolapse



Small Animal
  • Animals who have been hit by a vehicle
  • Abdominal pain and/or Bloat
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Fractures
  • Inability to urinate
  • Paralysis
  • Quills
  • Seizures
  • Toxic substance ingestion e.g. mouse poison, chocolate, topical ivermectin products
  • Wounds or lacerations
