Meet the Doctors

Dr. Key

Kimberly Key, DVM, Practice Owner

Dr. Key is a 2003 graduate of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, and has been serving Bay Beach since her graduation. Her history with Bay Beach, however, goes back even farther. Before embarking on what would become her dream profession, she served as a veterinary assistant for several years at the clinic. Dr. Key opened this satellite emergency hospital in 2017.

Although Dr. Key enjoys developing relationships with all of her four-legged patients, she enjoys her feline friends the most. In addition to serving and educating our patient’s owners during examinations, she especially enjoys the specific areas of surgery and ultrasonography.

Dr. Key lives in Virginia Beach with her family, her cats and two tireless trouble-seekers: Hogan and Palmer… the two best Pugs in the world.

Dr. Bell

Barbara Bell, DVM

Dr Bell was born and raised in southern Maryland. She has wanted to become a veterinarian since she was five years old. She received her B.S. in biology from Towson University in 1995. She then went on to pursue her dream and received her DVM from Virginia Tech in 2002. Dr Bell has worked in small animal general practice since graduating. She has a special interest in internal medicine and wound healing. Outside of work she enjoys spending time outside hiking with her dogs, swimming and paddle boarding at the beach, and traveling. Dr Bell's family includes her son, Logan and two fur-kids; Elli, a happy Labrador, and Sam, an energetic Jack Russell mix.

Dr. Burdine

Robin Burdine, DVM

Dr. Robin Burdine graduated from Christopher Newport University in Newport News, VA in 2003 and moved to St. Kitts that same year to pursue her veterinary school dream. She spent her clinical year at LSU in Baton Rouge and graduated in 2007 from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Burdine joined Bay Beach Emergency Veterinary Services in February of 2012, although she has lived in the Hampton Roads area for the last 20 years and started her career in veterinary medicine as a veterinary assistant on the peninsula for three years prior to veterinary school, primarily working in emergency medicine for the last 10 years. She has three Chihuahuas that she spoils immensely. Her fields of focus are emergency medicine, dermatology, surgery and internal medicine.

Dr. DeanChristin Dean, DVM

Dr. Dean is a 2007 graduate of North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine after earning a double B.S. in Animal Science and Biological Sciences. After this, she continued her studies by completing a small animal medical and surgical rotating internship at Friendship Hospital for Animals in Washington, D.C.

During her internship, Dr. Dean discovered her love for emergency medicine and came to Virginia beach to start a job at another local emergency practice in 2008. In 2009, when Bay Beach Veterinary Hospital opened it's doors for 24 hour emergency services, Dr. Dean joined us as one of our first emergency doctors. Dr. Dean left the emergency service in 2014 after having her first child to practice in day practice. She has recently returned to her passion for emergency medicine to practice at our new location.

Dr. Dean's specific interests include ultrasound, emergency medicine, and surgery. Outside of the hospital, she enjoys reading, paddle-boarding, scuba diving, and sitting (haha) staring at the water. She lives in Virginia Beach with her husband, 2 young children (3 1/2 year old Cole and 1 1/2 year old Dean), 2 dogs (a one-eyed beagle named Bella and a St. Bernard named Sasha), 2 polydactyl cats (Ernest and Herbert), a blue tongued skink (Jinx), and a fish tank (all of the fish have been named Dorothy by her 3 year old son).

Dr. Howard

Megan Howard, DVM

Dr. Howard is a 2016 graduate of St. George’s University located in the beautiful Caribbean nation of Grenada. She completed her final clinical year at the University of Tennessee and earned her Bachelor’s in Biological Sciences from Virginia Tech. After practicing for a year in general practice in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Dr. Howard joined Bay Beach’s new emergency team. She has a great fondness for exotics and enjoys soft tissue surgery, wound care, and emergency medicine. She shares her home with two dogs and two parrots. In her spare time, she enjoys singing with her birds, painting, and taking her dogs on new adventures.

Margaret Johnson, DVM

Dr. Johnson is a 30 year resident of the wonderful town of Virginia Beach. She received her undergraduate degree from Old Dominion University, and her veterinary degree from the Virginia- Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine in 1996.

She has had the privilege to have worked with many of Virginia Beach's veterinarians who were some of the first doctors to establish practices in the area. Dr. Johnson credits these veterinarians for their mentoring and helping shape her into who she is today. For almost 10 years, Dr. Johnson practiced emergency medicine in Virginia Beach before embarking into the small animal private practice world. Dr. Johnson has recently returned to her love of emergency medicine with Bay Beach Veterinary Emergency Hospital.

When not working, Dr. Johnson enjoys time with her family that includes her giant Maine Coon kitty named Dr. Strangelove, and her two lively retrievers who love to jump and swim. They have competed at world Dock Dog competitions for North American Diving Dogs.
