Exotic Pet Insurance

Did you know that Nationwide, a well-known insurance agency, now offers pet insurance for exotic pets as well as dogs and cats? In 2020, Nationwide became the first insurance agency to offer coverage for exotic pets – this is incredible news! They have two plan options: one that covers accidents, illnesses and wellness exams and the second option is just for accident and illness coverage. The best part is that you're free to visit any licensed veterinarian, anywhere in the world—even specialists and emergency providers. So, this means you can continue to see me or any of our other doctors at Dogwood! Like all pet insurers, Nationwide does not cover taxes, waste, grooming, boarding, or pre-existing conditions. But unlike other pet insurers, they do have plans that cover pretty much everything else. That includes hereditary and congenital conditions, wellness care, exam fees and much more.

If you want coverage for your bird, rabbit, reptile or other exotic pet, owners now have a great option! They cover most birds and a wide range of exotic pets, including: amphibians, chameleons, chinchillas, ferrets, geckos, gerbils, goats, guinea pigs, hamsters, hedgehogs, iguanas, lizards, mice, potbellied pigs, rats, rabbits, snakes, sugar gliders, tortoises, and turtles.

Many birds and reptiles can live a long life (sometimes even longer than ours), so considering pet insurance for them is a smart option! This will give you assurance that if your pet becomes ill that we can use diagnostics and medical therapies required for their best care without worrying about the financial aspect. Sometimes, obtaining a diagnosis in a sick pet requires multiple tests like blood work, radiographs, ultrasound, serology, fecal exam, etc. These tests can add up quickly! However, with having insurance coverage for your pet, you can confidently proceed with diagnostics and treatment without worrying about cost. The wellness exams are also extremely important to perform bi-annually for early disease detection. Our exotic species are experts in hiding illness, so having them seen often helps detect diseases before they become problematic.

We are so excited about this great insurance option for our exotic species! If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know and I will be happy to discuss it with you. You may also get more information on Nationwide’s website: https://www.petinsurance.com/birds.
