Laser Surgery

In our continued dedication to improving our services and technology to better take care of your beloved feline and canine children, Pikesville Animal Hospital has recently purchased a surgical laser.  Surgical lasers have been proven to result in less bleeding, less pain and a lower risk of infection all of which help your pet to recover faster from surgery.

By now we’ve all heard the term ‘Laser’ (those are my air quotes) referring to anything from the laser that will destroy the earth to laser liposuction.

Of course many of you have heard about and or benefited from the use of our Companion Therapy Laser treatments for inflammatory diseases such as arthritis and for wound healing, both traumatic wounds and post operative incisions.

The surgery laser is a bit of a different breed.  This is a CO2 laser that has a highly focused beam of light that interacts with the water in tissues - cutting into the tissue and at the same time it cauterizes blood vessels within the tissue as well as nerve endings - benefiting the surgeon by minimizing hemorrhage in the surgery field and the patient by helping control pain from the surgical incision.  This surgical technique is used in many soft tissue surgeries of the skin - from mass removals to eyelid manipulation for conditions such as entropion (where the eyelid has too much tissue, rolling in on and irritating the cornea).  One of the other surgical techniques we are excited to provide is for those brachecephalic breeds that have nasal openings that are too small, and soft palates that are too long. Laser has been instrumental in performing these procedures in our veterinary patients.

To read more about the laser, please see Cutting Edge Laser website.

Of course as always we welcome you to contact us with any questions or concerns and we are always happy to discuss your pets surgical needs and best options for you and your dog or cat.
