What amount of time will I have? For dogs, plan time for walks, play, and attention. Birds need a lot of attention and care. With cats and rabbits, plan for litter box cleaning, attention, and feeding. Reptiles require less time but still need to be fed, cleaned and given love. Fish can be great low-maintenance pets although a saltwater tank can be time-consuming. 

Any pet allergies? Many people are allergic to the fur and dander of pets. You may want to consult your physician on this. Consider a hairless dog, cat or rat. Also, think about dogs with longer coats that don't shed (as much). They will have to be groomed. 

How big is your space? If you are in a small apartment, a Great Dane might not be the pet for you. You may want to consider a cat, small bird, rabbit, rat or small reptile. 

What can you afford? Any pet will need food. Pets such as rabbits, chinchillas, and prairie dogs will need fresh hay, pellets, and cages. A puppy or kitten will need vaccinations, heartworm prevention, and food. 

What personality do you want? Do you hike or camp? Consider a Lab, Boxer, or Golden Retriever. If a playful, smaller pet is what you want, think about an Abyssinian cat, Schnauzer, or rabbit. Docile pets could include Maine Coon cats, Bulldogs, reptiles, hedgehogs, or fish.
