In puppyhood, your dog romped and played to stay strong and in prime condition. With age, however, joint or weight problems can limit activity and lead to more physical problems. Although aging is inevitable, you can help keep your dog more fit throughout his lifetime by following these steps:

Check Nutrition: Aging pets requirements are different than that of a younger pet. Adult food may be too rich or not high enough in fiber. Ask us about "senior" food products formulated for older dog's needs.

Keep Walking: Don't skimp on daily walks when your dog gets older; simply adjust the length and terrain to suit their age.

Consider Supplements: A daily multivitamin, fiber, brain function support and glucosamine for joint discomfort are examples of supplements that may help with the problems that come along with aging. We will be happy to suggest the right ones for your dog.

Visit us regularly: A regular exam is important for maintaining your aging dog's health, including regular testing to detect changes and provide early notice of heart, liver and kidney problems. Be sure to discuss any problems with us before they become bigger issues.

Make accommodations for comfort: Older dogs have more trouble regulating their body temperatures. Provide a warm spot in the house in cold months and a well-ventilated place in the warmer months. with soft bedding to pad tender joints.

Practice Patience: Your aging dog may not move or respond to commands as quickly as they used to. They may develop incontinence. They can exhibit uncharacteristic behaviors that are signs of senility. Such is life. Dogs need our affection and understanding even more than ever in their senior years.

Your dog's golden years can be happy ones when you provide for their fitness and comfort and work with us to keep them healthy.
