Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) or Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) is common in cats, especially as they age. Unfortunately, cats can lose as much as 75% of their kidney function before symptoms appear.

There is no cure for kidney failure, but we can delay its progression and manage pain. Medications can support the existing kidney function and help alleviate some of the work that the kidneys do to allow cats to live many years with the diagnosis.

The sooner we begin to support renal function. the slower the progression of the disease. Call us if your cat shows any of these symptoms for several days:

  • Vomiting
  • Weight Loss
  • Sitting hunched over a water or food bowl
  • Excessive urination
  • Dehydration

These symptoms may indicate feline CKD and CRF but we'll need to run blood tests to be sure. Cats over the age of 6 need annual blood and urine tests to screen kidney function. Your veterinarian will be happy to discuss prevention and treatment,
