Pet's are susceptible to many of the same diseases that afflict people. Cancer affects nearly one in three dogs. It can develop in any part of the body at any stage of life. Certain breeds such as Rottweilers, Great Danes, German Shepherds, Greyhounds, and Poodles have a higher incidence of cancer. There are several types of cancer, including bone or skin cancer as well as tumors that affect various organs of the body. Lymphoma- cancer of the lymph nodes- is one of the most common types for dogs.

Lymphoma often affects dogs in their middle to older years, It typically appears as swollen glands but can affect lymph nodes that are not visible from the outside of the body. 

Symptoms that may include vomiting, weight loss, diarrhea, lethargy, difficulty breathing and loss of appetite. Increased thirst and/or urination may also develop

It is unknown why lymphomas form. It may be linked to various environmental factors such as exposure to pesticides; however, there may be a genetic predisposition since lymphoma and other cancers have a higher incidence in certain breeds. 

Since lymphoma affects the lymph system, it compromises the body's immune system, lowering the body's ability to defend against bacteria and viruses. Cancer can cause significant pain for a dog and shorten its life. It can also secondary conditions.

Treatment for canine cancer focuses on providing the patient with the best quality of life for the longest time possible. Chemotherapy can be a successful treatment for dogs with lymphoma and fortunately, many dogs tolerate the treatment well.
