Q: Should I get my pet microchipped?

A: Yes! The microchip is a way to permanently identify your pet. It is the size of a grain of rice that goes under the skin over the shoulder. When a microchip reader is waved over the shoulders, it shows the chip number that corresponds to your address and phone number. Be sure to update the information when you get a new phone number or if you move.

Q: My 12-year-old cat limps occasionally. What should I do?

A: Limping can be a sign of arthritis. Bring her in to see if this is the case. A multimodal approach works best, combining Glucosamine, Omega 3 fatty acids, NSAIDS, etc. You must be careful as cats cannot tolerate some medications. We can also consider acupuncture and therapeutic laser.

Q: Every time I talk to my puppy, she pees. How can I get her to stop?

A: This is a sign of submission and excitement. Do NOT speak harshly to her as this will make her more submissive and the problem will get worse. Avoid high-pitched greetings; talk quietly and calmly. Don't act excited and avoid looking directly at her. Dogs will usually grow out of this behavior but call us if it persists in case there is a medical issue.

Q: My cat seems to be eating more but losing weight. What should I do?

A: Increased hunger and thirst with weight loss can be a sign of thyroid or kidney disease, diabetes, dental problems, and other diseases. A blood test can screen for these diseases.

Q: How do I know when my pet needs his teeth cleaned?

A: Look for red gums, tartar build-up, bad breath, weight loss, pain when eating, or decreased appetite. Get their teeth cleaned regularly to avoid bone and tooth loss, tooth root infections, and heart and kidney disease.
