February is National Pet Dental Month!

Periodontal disease is the most common health issue for cats and dogs, affecting 85 percent of pets over age three. It causes chronic pain and can devastate your pet's health. Periodontal disease leads to tooth resorption, cracked teeth, stomatitis, and root abscesses and most pets don't show signs until the problem becomes serious.

Some of the symptoms to look for are difficulty eating and swallowing, sensitivity around the mouth, red and inflamed gums, pawing at the mouth or rubbing their mouth on the floor. Pain from the diseased gums and teeth may cause irritability and depression. Other signs are bad breath, drooling, or blood on gums, toys, or water bowls. Pets tend to hide pain, so instead of crying out, you may notice a change in their mood.

The most important thing you can do to protect your pet against dental disease is schedule regular cleanings and checkups. Brushing your pet's teeth regularly, inspecting your pet's teeth, and giving treats that help reduce tartar also help protect them from periodontal disease.
