Small breed dogs, especially those with "bulging" eyes are more prone to having their eyeballs come forward and out of the socket. This is usually secondary to a trauma such as a dog bite to the head. This is a medical emergency! At Middletown Animal hospital, we recently had a dog with this problem. We replaced the eyeball into the socket under general anesthesia. The eyelids were temporarily sutured closed. Some vision may be restored, but we will not know until more time has passed and we are able to remove the sutures and test her vision.
