Because pets cannot speak they cannot tells us who they belong to when they are lost. Microchipping and registration is the only permanent method of identifying your pet. Microchipping works.....but only if you REGISTER your animal online.
The importance of having a pet microchipped and registered was clearly seen during the Valley Fire on September 12, 2015. Hundreds of pets came into Middletown Animal Hospital that were lost with no collars or ID tags. Of these, only a small percentage of animals were microchipped. Of the microchipped animals, only a fraction were registered. As a result, we had pets in the hospital with microchips but no way to connect them to their owners.
Although typically rare, disasters and tragic situations can and do happen. Microchipping a pet and keeping owner information current is a way to ensure your pet can be identified and returned to you, should the worst happen and your pet is lost with no ID tag.
At Middletown Animal Hospital we recommend Datamars Microfindr microchips and PetLink because of the quality and commitment to service. The microchips meet ISO standards and the registration with PetLink is free.
