Pet Travel Tips from Our Rancho Cucamonga Veterinary Staff
As you start to plan your spring trips and long weekend getaways, it's important to make sure you know how to help your pet stay safe and healthy if they're coming along! At Day Creek Animal Hospital serving Rancho Cucamonga, CA, we have several ideas to ensure the whole family has a great trip.
5 Veterinary-Approved Tips for Pet Travel
- Use a comfortable (but not overstuffed) crate. There are plenty of reasons why you shouldn't let your pet roam free in the car during long trips. It can put him at risk of injury, distract you, and keep his stress levels higher. A crate gives your pet a place to relax and feel safe. Place a comfy blanket and a favorite toy or two inside.
- Pack your paperwork and supplies. It's helpful to have the most updated copies of all your pet’s vaccinations and any other relevant medical information about your animal companion. If your pet requires any medications or specialized food, be sure to bring plenty of these supplies as well. Our Rancho Cucamonga vet team can help you get organized!
- Plan for plenty of breaks. Schedule time in your itinerary for your animal to get out, relieve himself, and exercise.
- Keep pets well-hydrated and avoid overfeeding. You might consider feeding your pet a bit less than usual on travel days. Why? Being in the car and around new environments can be super stressful for your pet and lead to diarrhea. Just make sure your pets always have access to fresh clean water!
- Be prepared for an emergency. Do you know what to do if your pet gets lost? In addition to having him wear an ID collar, consider getting your pet microchipped. This dramatically increases the chances that you'll be reunited with your pet if he goes missing.
