Common Household Items That Are Poisonous to Your Dog

When it comes to common worries with our pets, freak injuries and parasitic infections are probably at the top of the list. The truth is, those are just two of the important things for owners to be vigilant about.

Unfortunately, there are also a lot of hidden dangers commonly encountered by pets in the home. The ingestion of certain foods and medications can have serious consequences. What's more, given the presence of so many different products in the home, pets may easily have access to things they shouldn't.

If you're concerned about common household items that can be poisonous to your pet, contact us at Waterloo Animal Hospital, and talk with our doctors and staff.

Keep These Items from Your Dog's Reach

Our highly skilled veterinarians are dedicated to the health and well-being of your pet. That includes helping you to avoid an emergency visit.

Most people know that exposure to things like pesticides can poison a dog, but what about lesser-known toxins? Things like antifreeze or cleaning products and certain plants you have in the house can also cause serious harm. Laundry detergent pods, liquid air fresheners, fabric softener sheets, batteries, plastic wrap, and alcohol and tobacco products are also dangerous. Human medications like NSAIDS, anti-depressants, birth control, ADD/ ADHD, ACE inhibitors, and beta-blockers are a few that are hazardous to your pet.

This is by no means a comprehensive list, but a general outline of things to be aware of.

Beware of Sugar-Free Gum, Mints, and More

Some of the worst cases of food poisoning veterinarians encounter are pets who have ingested things like sugar-free gum and breath mints. Those items, which are often left on side tables and countertops (and in easy reach of dogs), contain a very dangerous substance called Xylitol.

Xylitol is a sweetener that can also be found in things such as toothpaste, vitamins, and more. Sadly, while harmless to humans it can cause low blood sugar, seizures, liver failure, and death in pets, even in very small amounts.
