Aging dogs can develop canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS),  a degenerative brain disease similar to Alzheimer's in humans. As with our human loved ones, it can be heartbreaking to see these changes take place in pets we have lived with for many years.

Symptoms of CDS include disorientation or confusion, failing to remember routines, failing to get out of your way, barking for no reason, changes in sleep patterns, the loss of housetraining, pacing, stumbling, not responding to calls or commands, and depression.

Other medical issues can produce these symptoms, so it is important that we rule out other causes. If canine CDS is suspected, we can discuss medications or supplements that may slow its progression as well as ways to manage anxiety at home, stick to a daily routine to help them feel more secure. Continue with moderate walks, prevent any added stress, provide for their comfort, and be careful they don't get injured. The most important thing you can do for your dog is to provide love and compassion. We are always here to help if you have questions.
