For those families adding new pets to the mix from the holidays, we wanted to remind everyone the importance of having an established veterinarian that can perform routine wellness visits. Routine wellness visits are a great way to help your pet live a healthy life for as long as possible. These visits can also help us catch potential health issues earlier and may help you avoid additional costs associated with treatments if the disease goes undetected.

What we look at during a visit and why:

At Animal Medical and Surgical hospital, we offer preventative care packages for all ages. These packages include, but are not limited to, a comprehensive physical exam, a complete blood count, and a complete urinalysis. Pets can’t tell us how they’re feeling. It’s usually in how they look or act that tells you something is wrong. Regardless of your pet’s age, you as an owner, play a key role in helping your pet stay as healthy as possible. Awareness of the warning signs and regular checkups, including a physical exam and blood work, are the best ways to ensure that your pet lives a long, healthy, and happy life.

Many of the diagnostics can be done in the hospital with most results back in a matter of minutes. Other tests may be sent to a laboratory and results are typically back within 1-2 days. Normal results can rule out certain diseases immediately. Our doctors will also store this information for the life of your pet and use it to understand them better. If results are abnormal, our doctor can make fast decisions about next steps, including treatment and additional tests. This in return will give you answers that can help your pet right away.

In conclusion, it’s important to get your pet checked out at least once a year and to look out for any warning signs that your pet might need to be seen sooner. Remember that 10% of pets that appear healthy to their owner during their regular checkups have underlying diseases. That’s why doing routine blood work is an important part of their exam while they are at the hospital. If your pet is due for an annual visit or you’re interested in buying a preventative care package, please call one of our offices to set your next appointment up.
