Did you know, veterinarians estimate as many as 59% of all pets are obese? There has been an increase in overweight dogs and cats by over 150% over the past 10 years! This means most pets aren’t getting fed the appropriate amount for their individual needs. As an animal owner, it’s important to maintain a healthy weight for your pet early on, since you are their main advocate. How can you tell if your pet is overweight? Use this chart to compare your pet’s body composition:

Obesity can reduce a pet's life expectancy by more than 2 years! You’re lowering your animal's risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, respiratory disease, kidney disease, and some forms of cancer by maintaining a healthy weight. Obesity can also lead to arthritis, which there is no cure for. It’s much easier on your pet to have a healthy diet to prevent any uncomfortability from the start therefore lessening the chance of needing a prescription for pain control. Here are some things you can do to start your pet on a healthy journey:

- Make an exam with your veterinarian to discuss which food is most appropriate for your pet. They will also tell you the correct amount to give and how often.

- Take your pet for frequent walks when weather permits.

- To reward your pet, feed them treats that are low in fat. Lean treats are a great product that we would suggest.

- Make a commitment! Make sure everyone in the household is on the same page about your pet's weight loss journey.

- Set realistic weight loss goals with your veterinarian and record your pet's progress.

Making your pet’s weight loss journey a priority can be fun for both you and your furry friend! This promotes an active lifestyle that is beneficial for the entire family. One of our veterinarians would be more than happy to make a plan to put your animal on the right path should you have any questions about your pet’s weight. Starting with an examination is key to making that first leap. Please call one of our offices to set up your next appointment.
