Keep reading to learn more.

What Is an Echocardiogram?

This non-invasive type of diagnostic test is performed on animals and humans. It allows a vet to evaluate the condition of an animal’s heart. Sometimes this test is referred to as an ECG or an EKG. Your pet’s heart health is very important. Just like with humans, diseases of the heart can affect quality of life and longevity.

This test can pick up on abnormalities or health conditions that your pet could be at risk for. If your pet’s heart is not functioning properly, it could become very sick. We want to help your pets stay healthy by providing these important types of diagnostics as well as early interventions.

Why Was This Test Recommended for My Pet?

If our vet recommended this test, it was likely due to some symptoms or abnormalities your pet was exhibiting. Some of these symptoms might include lack of energy, rapid heartbeat, or other problems.

What Can the Test Check For?

This type of test can evaluate how big a heart is, how thick the walls of the heart are, the shape of the heart, how well the heart is pumping, and detect any abnormalities. This information can then be used to diagnose and create a treatment plan for your pet.

What Should I Expect during the Test?

This is not considered to be an invasive type of procedure. It can be completed without any pain to your pet. Some vets, however, do choose to provide some sedation for the animal during the procedure. This could be done for the safety of the pet and the staff if the animal seems agitated.

The technician may need to shave a small patch of fur in order to do the test accurately. A probe will be placed in this shaved spot. The test will then commence and the data will be collected.
