Routine Vaccinations

Vaccinations are an important part of keeping your pet healthy. Our staff will consult with you to determine the best vaccination protocol for your pet and their lifestyle. We carry all of the core vaccines that will protect your pet from the most common diseases. For dogs, this includes Rabies and DA2PPC (Distemper, Adenovirus, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza and Coronavirus). Non-core vaccines are given depending on the dog’s exposure risk. These include vaccines against Bordetella Bronchisepta and Leptospira Bacteria. For Cats, core vaccines include Rabies and FVRCP (Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia). Non-core vaccines include Leukemia for outdoor cats with potential exposure to this deadly disease.

Dog-vaccinations-outdoorsPuppies and kittens should receive a series of vaccinations starting at 6-8 weeks of age. At Pawz Veterinary Clinic, we recommend administering a minimum of 3 core combination vaccinations at 3-4 week intervals. The final dose should be administered at 12-16 weeks of age and will include their first Rabies vaccine.

Most cats and dogs show no ill affects from routine vaccinations. Occasionally minor, or short-lived reactions such as fever, sluggishness, loss of appetite, or pain at the injection site may occur. These should resolve within 24-48 hours. Rarely major reactions such as vomiting, diarrhea, facial swelling and/or hives, difficulty breathing and seizures may occur and require immediate medical attention.

Vaccines are a very important part of the health of your dog or cat. Potentially deadly diseases can affect any pet, at any age, and regardless of their lifestyle. It is important to discuss with your Pawz veterinarian a vaccination protocol that is right for your dog or cat based on their environment, travel habits, age and medical history. Not every pet needs to be vaccinated for every disease, but an up-to-date rabies vaccination is required in the state of Colorado.
