*Please notify the clinic within 12 hours of foaling for evaluation of the mare and foal. The first 12 hours of birth is an important time in the development of antibody immunity in the foal from the dam. A blood test on the foal can help determine adequate immunity. The following will be provided by the veterinarian during the postpartum evaluation.*
Mare
- Tetanus Toxoid - 1 ml Administered in the muscle 12 hours after foaling
- Check placenta and save for veterinary evaluation. Placenta may be placed in a bucket of water.
- Oxytocin - 1 ml administered in the muscle if the placenta has not passed by 3 hours post foaling.
Foal
- Tetanus Antitoxin - 1500 units administered in the hamstring muscle 12 hours post foaling.
- Naval Dip - After the foal is standing and has nursed , dip naval in chlorahexadine solution and hold approximately 20 seconds. Repeat this procedure once daily for 2 days.
- Eneme - Foal should have a bowel movement after nursing for the first time. If the foal is straining to defecate a fleet enema may be used.
- IgG Test - Should be run 12 hours post foaling be Dr. Dunlap. This test helps determine if adequate transfer of antibodies from mare to foal has occurred.
