The Importance Of A Puppy Pet Wellness Exam

We recommend that you establish a relationship with our Edmonton vet clinic as soon as you bring your new puppy home, or even a few weeks before so you that you can schedule an initial wellness exam. Your puppy should see us by the time it's 6-weeks-old, so we can:

• Evaluate its overall health (which includes a thorough examination of its weight, skin, coat, limbs, ears, eyes, gums, teeth, and blood and fecal profile)
• Ensure its getting the right kind and amount of nutrition
• Provide you with the necessary preventive parasite medications (to protect your pet against tick, flea, and bug-borne illnesses including heartworm and Lyme disease)
• Educate you on proper at-home puppy care techniques
• Help you decide whether you should spay or neuter your dog, and
• Initiate the all-important pet vaccination schedule

What Pet Vaccinations Does My Puppy Need? 

Pet vaccinations are a crucial part of your puppy's well-being. At our veterinary clinic, we offer both "core" and "non-core" vaccines that will the health of your young dog as well as other dogs (and even humans!) in the community. In general, these vaccines should be administered following a specific timeline based on how old your dog is, with the first round of "core" vaccines given between 6-8 weeks of age. Additional vaccines and booster shots are typically given around 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, and then every 1-3 years as mandated. Our vet staff will carefully review with you all the vaccines your pet may need (including distemper, measles, parainfluenza, parvovirus, and bordetella) and when to schedule your appointments.
