Kidney Disease: Nothing to "Kid" About

Kidney disease: nothing to kid about

By Sarah Trimble, DVM

When it comes to the kidneys, their main job is to help conserve water and filter out certain “wastes” from our blood. They also contribute to making red blood cells, controlling blood pressure, and regulating certain electrolytes. Unfortunately, impairment of this important organ is very common in our canine and especially our feline friends.

Typically, kidney disease is classified as acute or chronic. Acute kidney disease occurs quickly and can occasionally be reversed if caught early. It can be caused by a severe bacterial infection or a toxin (such as grapes in dogs or lilies in cats). Chronic kidney disease may have a more gradual onset and results in irreversible damage.

The most common, and often earliest, symptom to recognize is an increase in drinking. This is often accompanied by dehydration despite the higher water intake, as the kidneys are no longer retaining water as they should. Other symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhea, frequent urination, decreased appetite, anemia, and/or high blood pressure.

Although there is no cure for chronic kidney disease, there may be options for managing symptoms. Early intervention can be incredibly beneficial for prolonging a pet’s life and improving the quality of that life. Kidney disease is diagnosed by both bloodwork and a urinalysis. For this reason, annual bloodwork can be an extremely useful tool for monitoring changes in pet organ function over time.

Proactive veterinary care, including regular check-ups and prompt attention to any new symptoms, can make a substantial difference in managing kidney disease (as well as other conditions) in our beloved pets. By staying vigilant and responsive, we can provide them with the best possible care and support throughout their lives.
