Just Cats Expands Team of Feline Specialists

Just Cats Veterinary Clinic of Guilderland and Saratoga Springs announces the addition of a new veterinarian with a specialized background in toxicology and animal poison control, Donna Mensching, DVM.

Dr. Mensching graduated from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1995. After several years in private and emergency practice, she earned a Master’s Degree in environmental toxicology, studying the role of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in feline hyperthyroidism. PBDEs, chemical contaminants most commonly associated with flame retardant materials and other manufacturing, can be found in the air, water and soil.

After Dr. Mensching became board-certified in veterinary toxicology at the University of Illinois, she worked in the animal poison control setting in Illinois and Washington.

"The idea of working with one species is appealing—to be able to offer a more knowledgeable array of diagnostics and therapeutics and make a bigger difference with feline medicine," said Dr. Mensching about joining the Just Cats Veterinary Clinic.

"I have an extensive understanding of feline hyperthyroidism and the potential causes in indoor environments, as well as potential dietary risk factors. My toxicology training also positions me well in terms of accidental exposures for cats to all sorts of plants, medications, and other products used in the home," Dr. Mensching said.

"We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Mensching to Just Cats," said principal veterinarian, Susan Sikule, DVM. "Her unique scope of experience will bring expanded insight to our feline practice and to the Capital Region."
