Cruciate Repair Surgery – Tibial Tuberosity Advancement

A Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CCL) tear is one of the most common knee injuries in dogs. The CCL is similar to the ACL, or anterior cruciate ligament, in humans. When a dog suffers a CCL tear, he or she will experience a great deal of pain and have extreme difficulty walking normally. To repair a torn CCL, surgery is almost always required, especially for canines that are larger in size or very active. Surgery is the quickest, most effective way to alleviate pain and reduce the risks of further joint damage down the road.

There are multiple types of surgeries that can be applied to repair a CCL. At Lucks Lane Veterinary Clinic, we employ the most up-to-date procedure known as Tibial Tuberosity Advancement (TTA) surgery. It involves repositioning the front portion of the tibia and then using a titanium plate, screws and a titanium “cage” to hold everything in place. A permanent, synthetic implant is then used to replace moved portion of tibia.
