Microchipping

A microchip is literally a chip, also called a transponder, encased in glass and roughly the size of a grain of rice. It is inserted under the skin with a needle. This injection is not any more painful for your pet than a regular shot. Your pet does not require anesthesia and this is not considered surgery. It activates when a scanner passes over the area with the chip. The scanner emits radio waves that activate the chip. When the chip is active, it sends an identification number to the scanner. That number then shows up on a screen. A microchip can be inserted during a regular vet visit to Shelbyville Road Veterinary Hospital in Indianapolis.

Why Should I Have My Pet Microchipped?

If you have a microchip inserted into your pet, you are more likely to get him back if he gets lost. The microchip only contains the identification number. It does not contain any personal information about you or your family, nor can it track your pet like a GPS. If an animal is taken to a shelter or vet's office, they immediately scan the animal for a chip. The identification number is in a database that you’ve already registered your contact information with. When the identification number is entered into the database, the information you’ve provided is found. However, this information is only available if you register the chip.

Could I Insert The Microchip In My Pet?

No. It’s not recommend that you attempt to insert a microchip on your own. While it is small and does not hurt your pet, the microchip must be inserted properly. It must be in a specific place and cannot be too deep into the animal or it may be difficult for the scanner to read. If the microchip is not inserted properly, it may cause some problems for your pet.
