Background

Dr. Stephen Wyler was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. At age four, he told his parents he wanted to be an animal doctor and a guitar player. After attending James Madison High School and spending 2 years at Queens College, he transferred to the University of Georgia, where he could pursue his Pre-Veterinary studies. After graduating from the University of Georgia with a B.S. in Zoology, he applied to the University of Bologna Veterinary School. Three weeks later, he departed to begin the first year of Veterinary School. With his knowledge of Spanish from high school and college courses, as well as having spoken Spanish with Cuban and Puerto Rican musicians, he was able to quickly grasp the Italian language and became the first American to pass the Italian Language Exam at the University. While attending classes and clinics, Dr. Wyler worked as an interpreter for the Medical School at Bologna University, in the Institute of Nephrology and Renal Dialysis. He assisted the department head in organizing many international conferences for urologists, as well as teaching English to the interns and residents. During this entire period, he managed to find time to play music, as well as study Martial Arts, which was to become another passion in life. Upon graduation, Dr. Wyler returned to New York, where he joined a group practice in Brooklyn. After several years of working at various animal hospitals in Queens and Long Island, he purchased a hospital where he would remain a partner for 18 years. Seeing a great need for an exotic animal veterinarian in Queens, he opened Trylon Vet Care Austin Street Vet Center, with the goal of providing quality Veterinary Care for exotic animals, as well as dogs and cats. Dr. Wyler's special interests have always been dermatology, internal medicine, radiology, soft-tissue surgery, and exotic animal medicine. As Veterinary Medicine is rapidly changing from day to day, Dr. Wyler feels that attending numerous courses and lectures is not only a passion, but also an obligation in order to offer his patients the most recent diagnostics and therapies available. Although New York State requires a Veterinarian to complete 15 hours of continuing education over a three year period, Dr. Wyler often completes fifty to one hundred hours annually. Dr. Wyler is the New York State Liaison to the Association of Avian Veterinarians, an international organization to promote the proper care and well being of birds. Recently Dr. Wyler was honored by the Veterinary Medical Association of New York City with the Distinguished Life Service Award for his 35 years of dedication to the field When not working or attending meetings, he can be found at many of the local venues for Jazz and Latin Music, and especially Brazilian Music. He has met many Brazilian singers and musicians and maintains a large Brazilian music library.
