Pet Dental Care

Cats and dogs require routine maintenance of their teeth, just as people do. If your pet is suffering from tooth pain, bad breath, inflammation of the gums, a tooth infection, or if they just require a cat or dog teeth cleaning session, Thomas Glen Erin Animal Hospital can help. Our Mississauga veterinarian is available for pet dental emergencies and care. Read on to learn why it is important to care for your pet's teeth, how you can do it at home, and what our vet can do to help.

.

Why It Is Important to Perform Pet Dental Care

If you do not check and clean your pet's teeth on a routine basis, they are at risk for health difficulties that arise as a result of the deterioration of the teeth or gums. If a cat or dog teeth cleaning is not done frequently, a buildup of tartar and plaque will occur. When this happens, it pushes its way underneath the gumline. This will cause the bone structure to disintegrate and eventually teeth will fall out. When you clean a pet's teeth, check the inside of their mouth for signs of decay, broken teeth, inflammation of the gums, or a tooth infection. If any of these are present, contact our vet for emergency care.

How to Care for Your Pet's Teeth at Home

Perform daily brushings of your pet's teeth using a pet toothbrush and paste. Pet toothpaste comes in several flavors such as chicken, beef tartar control, and vanilla mint to mention a few. You can purchase these toothpastes here from our clinic. Use a small dab and rub it over a tooth or two to remove bacteria. If your pet does not care for the process, try a different flavored paste. In time, your pet will enjoy the procedure. Continue to add a few teeth to the regimen until you are able to clean the bunch in one sitting. As an alternative, use pet dental wipes to remove debris. Tartar-control treats are also available to aid in the removal of surface bacteria.

What Our Veterinarian Does When Pet Dental Care Is Needed

Our vet will perform cat or dog teeth cleaning during routine examinations. If your pet has chronic bad breath, the signs of tooth pain, inflammation of the gums, or a possible tooth infection, it is necessary to make an emergency appointment. Your pet's teeth and gums will be checked in detail and appropriate action will be taken to alleviate pain and discomfort. This may require a tooth pulling or medication.
