Internal Medicine
One of the
frustrations of dealing with sick pets is that they can't tell you specifically what's wrong. That is why diagnostic resources are essential. When your pet is not well, we need to find out
what is happening on the inside. Diagnostic testing and physical examinations help our veterinarians identify the problem so we can accurately diagnose and then partner with you to develop an
effective treatment plan.
Along with the advanced training and experience of our staff, Plattsburgh Animal Hospital makes use of the latest technology to diagnose and treat your sick pet.
Behavior Medication For Your Pet
You want the bond between you and your pet to be strong and durable. Yet behavior problems are the primary reason why pets are either sent to shelters or euthanized. The good news is that
behavioral problems can be improved with therapy. It's possible to repair the relationship between you and your pet if it has been damaged through behavior issues. We provide advice regarding
the correction of problems such as excessive barking, chewing, spraying, scratching, digging, house soiling and aggression.
We not only offer behavioral counseling, we can also make referrals to those specializing in behavior modification. We also offer phone consultations. Remember, behavioral issues are not
uncommon. They exist in about 40% of all household pets. Our three animal hospitals carry a line of medications for separation anxiety and cats that are marking (urinating) inappropriately in
the house. This medication is used in conjunction with behavioral training techniques, which our veterinarians can discuss in detail with you.
Nutrition Counseling
We offer prescription diets such as Hill’s, Royal Canin and Purina as well as nutrition counseling during office visits. Why is this important? Pets are living longer, healthier lives than ever before and a big part of that is due to our expanded knowledge of the importance of proper nutrition to overall health. In fact, nutrition is the biggest health variable controlled by a pet's caregiver. During your pet's comprehensive physical examination, the veterinarians within our Animal Hospital network evaluate his or her body condition and give recommendations based on what we see. For most pets, our recommendations include information on proper serving size and other feeding strategies to maintain optimal body weight and nutritional health. We also help you wade through the claims made by pet food producers so you can make the most informed choice. For example, dogs and cats are healthiest when they eat whole, natural foods.
Prescription Diets and Its Importance
Some pets have more serious nutritional challenges or chronic conditions that can benefit from a special diet. If we identify an issue in your pet, we will offer advice and provide information about diets that benefit specific medical conditions such as liver disease, bladder and kidney stones, renal failure, food allergies, diabetes and other conditions. We carry a variety of prescription foods. If your pet requires a prescription diet we do not carry, we may be able to order it for you.
Micro Chipping Your Pet
We carry Home Again microchips. How would you find a lost pet if its tag becomes lost or unreadable, or if you happen to be traveling and your pet wanders off? Studies have shown that more than 10 million pets get lost each year and about 90 percent would not be returned to their owner unless they have some form of permanent lost pet identification. Getting lost is the number one cause of pet death. This is why we use international microchips as a standard of care for all of the pets we care for. With a microchip, your pet can be identified quickly and easily by animal control officers, shelters, and veterinary hospitals. Pet microchips are safe, unalterable and permanent identification for pets. Our veterinary clinic offers complimentary registration and customer service seven days per week, 24 hours per day, and worldwide coverage since our pet microchips can be read by any International Organization for Standardization (ISO) compliant scanner in the world.
