Treatment Of Allergic Skin Disease

Therapy for allergic skin disease involves controlling symptoms. Medications used include shampoo therapy, antihistamines, omega-3 fatty acids, corticosteroids, Atopica® capsules, or Apoquel® tablets. In cases where food allergy is to blame therapy involves the use of strict adherence to a hypoallergenic diet. Medical therapy is satisfactory provided the symptoms do not persist for most of the year, the medication are effective, and side effects from the medications don not become problematic. Allergy testing and allergen specific immunotherapy should is recommended when:

(1)    Clinical symptoms are present for over 6 months of the year. 
(2)    Clinical symptoms are not controlled with medical therapy
(3)    Side effects from medical therapy are objectionable.
(4)    Excessive recurrent use of antibiotics and corticosteroids are needed to control the allergic dermatitis.
