Veterinary Technician: Full-time

One of Grayslake’s most established and reputable boutique veterinary clinics is actively seeking an energetic and outgoing Associate Veterinarian to join their team. They are a small 4 doctor animal clinic with a huge passion for caring for the local animal community and have an excellent team working environment. They are searching for a professional who is trustworthy, transparent and puts the client’s best interest first. They strive to deliver the gold standard of veterinary care, using traditional medicine practice as well as holistic care. Village Veterinary Clinic takes pride in handling a variety of cases and situations that may walk through the door. A referral clinic and emergency hospital is located just 2 miles from their clinic. They are currently in the process of a full clinic renovation to create a more efficient and beautiful environment. PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

  • Can provide compassionate care to patients and clients.
  • Can conduct oneself in a confident and professional manner even when stressed and/or focused on individual tasks.
  • Can legibly keep accurate medical records in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Can prepare and maintain the exam rooms and treatment areas.
  • Can perform physical assessments; record observations legibly in files or computer.
  • Can effectively restrain pets even when large or difficult.
  • Understands all common vaccinations and vaccination protocols and can explain to clients.
  • Understands the importance of a clean and orderly facility, does not hesitate to clean or organize as part of a normal job duty.
  • Maintains positive, cooperative relationships with other employees.
  • Gives SQ, IM and IV injections.
  • Can handle client’s medical questions with confidence and direct to veterinarians when appropriate.
  • Can prepare estimates for procedures and discuss financial commitments with clients supporting hospital financial policies.
  • Can explain necessary follow-up and homecare instructions.
  • Understands usage, dosage, and common side-effects for commonly used prescription drugs and can readily explain them to the clients.
  • Can maintain an appropriate inventory of all medical supplies as determined by the inventory control system.
  • Can assist the veterinarian in medical, surgical and dental procedures; prepares patients for surgery; administers anesthesia; monitors patients during surgery and recovery; administers fluids.
  • Can properly care for all surgical materials; keep the operating room properly stocked and prepared for surgery.
  • Can perform emergency procedures such as control of bleeding, resuscitation with oxygen, opening airways, and external cardiac massage.
  • Can perform clinical laboratory procedures such as fecal flotation exams, heartworm checks, skin scrapings, urinalysis, and fungal cultures; draws blood for laboratory analysis; maintains file of lab test results and ensures that test results are recorded in patient records.
  • Dress in a professional manner; scrubs and zero-foot exposure.
  • Check clients in and out of their appointments.
  • Can effectively position for and take radiographs.
  • Can perform electrocardiograms.
  • Required to initiate sales based upon gold standard of care to treat patient.
  • Can place IV catheters and properly care for them.
  • Knows common disease states and can alert veterinarians when symptoms change or when concerns arise with hospitalized patients.
  • Can refill prescriptions accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Can input Doctor notes and information accurately.
  • Document all communication in patient e-record.
  • Can admit patients following hospital policy and doctors written orders.
  • Can discharge patients based on the veterinarian’s orders, ensuring that patients are well groomed and in a medically appropriate state.

EDUCATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Veterinary Technician Certification (CVT) desirable but not required.
  • Previous On-The-Job Training when not a CVT - at least 1 year experience required.

Pay: starting rate at $15/HR depending on experience

Performance Expectations:

  • Provides compassionate, quality care to patients.
  • Works with clinic owner to set practice medical policies and procedures; performs all duties in accordance with them.
  • Is active in professional organizations and community activities.
  • Communicates objectives, motivates staff, builds and maintains morale; maintains core values and standards.
  • Helps to develop new programs and processes that meet clients’ changing needs.
  • Sets an example for the staff in dealing with clients; promotes the concept of the client-centered environment.
  • Delivers in-house medical training to the support staff when asked to do so.
  • Works toward and attains practice productivity standards.
  • Promotes cooperative working environment among staff members; understands the value of teamwork; shows enthusiasm and willingness to perform as necessary to help the practice function as a team.
  • Maintains positive, cooperative relationships with other employees.
  • Performs physical examinations using preliminary data provided by the veterinary technicians; diagnoses physical condition and presents diagnostic and treatment alternatives to the client being sensitive to their emotional as well financial needs.
  • Performs medical, surgical and dental procedures; provides emergency services in accordance with hospital standards of care.
  • Interprets the results of laboratory procedures and determines the appropriate protocol based on the results; reads radiographs and interprets EKGs.
  • Prescribes medications in accordance with manufacturers label instructions and uses. Understands common side-effects and common drug interactions with other medications.
  • Promptly, accurately and legibly updates client records in support of the SOAP reporting method in a timely manner.
  • Understands and carries out treatment orders from other veterinarians; makes necessary changes in treatment plan when diagnostic results support the decision to do so.
  • Works with the clinic owner on plans for developing and growing the business.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
