The importance of walks in your dog’s life

Exercise

We all know the importance of exercise for our health; it’s no different for our dogs. Walks are the best way for our dogs to get their needed exercise. Without walks, dogs can put on extra weight which can lead to a slew of health issues that shorten dogs’ lives. To increase your dogs exercise during a walk, try making him jump on benches or tables, run around a tree, or let him chase that squirrel. Just playing a simple game of fetch can make a huge difference in your dog’s health. Dog parks are also a great place for your dog to get some physical activity as he runs around and plays with his canine friends.

Socialization

Getting your dog accustomed to all kinds of different people is vital. Going on a walk is the best way to ensure this. On your walk, you will encounter many people of varying ages, sex, and colour. Your dog will get used to meeting people which lessens the chance of him developing aggression issues. You and your dog will also probably encounter other dogs. Getting used to seeing other dogs will also help with preventing aggression issues. It is also a great idea to take your dog to a dog park to interact with other canines.

Prevent boredom

Boredom is a big issue with dogs, and boredom leads to mischief. A bored dog will look for something to do. This might include chewing on your favourite pair of shoes, rummaging through the garbage for something to munch on, or digging in your garden. Going on a walk stimulates your dog’s mind. He is sniffing new things and experiencing the world outside. If your dog knows what the world outside his house is like, he will be less likely to run out your door. Because he has been outside many times before, it won’t be such a luring mystery that he wants to figure out.
