Radiosurgery

Radiosurgery From Our Animal Hospital

Whenever a sick animal is brought into Richview Animal Hospital, it is a devastating and sad experience for everyone involved. They are often in a lot of pain, and they are not knowledgeable enough to know what to do. Cancer is increasingly becoming a part of the aging process for numerous animals. One of the key procedures in treating the condition is Radiosurgery, a special type of therapeutic radiology.

What Is Radiosurgery?

Radiosurgery is commonly known in animal hospitals as Stereotactic Radiosurgery. It is a form of treatment that involves the application of high amounts of radiation to a predetermined area. The selected area is said to be stereo tactically determined, thus the name. Radiation surgery is ideally an intersection between radiation therapy and pet surgery. The treatment attempts to use radiation in a surgically precise way to eliminate the harmful cells. In this way, most radiation doses are delivered to the damaged tissue, and little gets to healthy cells.

Masses Treated in Radiosurgery

No matter how little, any form of radiation to the body has side effects; thus, the radiation dose is usually significantly lower in animals than humans. Additionally, larger masses receive less radiation because they are mostly made up of normal cells.

Before calculating the radiation dose needed, the growth is usually measured to determine whether it's eligible for this type of pet surgery. Typically, only growths that are 4cm in diameter are the cutoff for Radio surgery. Larger masses would need significantly more radiation that would ultimately kill the animal. The current highest recommended radiation amount is also not enough to kill all the harmful cells in masses larger than 4cm.

Benefits of Radiosurgery Over Radiotherapy

Your veterinarian ultimately knows what the best treatment for your animal is. However, thanks to the nature of radiation surgery, there are numerous benefits to be reaped from it. Here are some of the benefits of radiation surgery;

  • The precision means that there's little damage to the surrounding tissue.
  • Radiosurgery has fewer and less severe side effects compared to traditional radiotherapy options.
  • Radiosurgery is more accurate in targeting the diseased tissue.
  • It is highly effective in curing cancers and getting rid of tumors.
