Your New Furry Family Member

Thinking of getting a new dog? The best thing to do is be prepared. You and your new pet will have a much easier transition into the new family dynamic if you have everything you need ready! You will be much less stressed if you aren’t running back and forth to the store to pick up last-minute essentials. Here are a few things to add to your new pet checklist!

  • Food and water bowls: While this may seem simple, you want to pick up bowls that are appropriate for your pet’s size. You may also want to consider a mat for your bowls to ensure that your dog can’t slide the bowls around, or choose non-skid bowls for the same effect.
  • Toys:  Again, choosing size appropriate toys for your new dog is essential. Anything too small can be a choking hazard. Try and pick up toys that keep your dog busy but will stand up to the chewing. A brand like Kong has a variety of shapes and sizes for their toys, as well as gradient levels of strength for those tough chewers.

  • Beds:  The style of bed you get is more of a personal preference for you and your pet. There are many options out there. From personal experience, I would recommend getting a “starter” bed to see how your dog reacts to it. You don’t want to pick up a top-of-the-line bed and have it chewed to shreds on the first night.

  • Food and treats: Make sure you are picking up a quality food that is appropriate to your pet’s size and age. Discuss with your veterinarian if you have questions about your pet’s nutrition.

  • Collar/leash: If you are getting a growing puppy, ensure that your first set is adjustable to make them last as long as possible.

  • Grooming supplies: Combs, shampoos, nail trimmers! They may not seem like essentials until your new dog rolls in something that doesn’t smell too nice!!

  • Pooper scooper bags: The name is self-explanatory!

  • Enzymatic cleaner: To break down those tough stains from an accident! Even if your dog is well housebroken, they may have an accident and these cleaners will save your life with the smell.

  • A veterinarian: Whether for routine preventative medicine or emergency services, you should have a relationship with your veterinarian to ensure your dog’s health is looked after.

Congratulations on your new family member!
