Flying With Your Pet? What You Should Know

Tips From An Etobicoke, ON Vet About Flying With Your Pet

You might be excited to travel to an exotic location. Whether you have to bring your pet or you just want to, your pet might not be as happy to fly as you are to have him or her there. Our vet at Richview Animal Hospital, serving Etobicoke, ON and the surrounding area, has a few tips, so you have a happy and safe flight with your pet.

Animals Who Are Allowed to Fly

No matter which airline you choose, you'll only be able to bring certain animals on the airplane. Some allow small animals like rabbits, dogs, and cats while some airlines limit you to dogs and cats only. Sizes requirements are similar from one airline to another but differ slightly, so you should contact the airline before you either book or fly. You may be able to have a larger dog if it's a service dog, but once again, you should contact your chosen airline for specifics.

Health Certificate  For Your Pet

All airlines require you to get a health certificate for pets before you travel via airplane. You must have a health certificate that's signed by a vet at least 10 days before your flight. The health certificate ensures your pet is healthy enough to fly. It also protects other passengers and pets from injury and serious disease. It protects the airline if something should happen to your pet on the flight as the result of a health condition. This is an ideal time to catch up on your vaccines because airlines and hotels often times require up-to-date vaccination information before your pet can board the plane. If you're flying out of the country, the country itself will more than likely require you to have a health certificate for your pet.

Flight Requirements

Some flights allow your pet to fly in the cabin with you. He or she must remain in a carrier the entire duration of the flight. Your pet will be situated in front of you. Each airline is different in terms of requirements, so you must read the terms and conditions online or contact the airlines for specifics. You want to make sure you have everything you need from the vet and other specifics, so there aren't any issues before you take off. Make sure you contact your airline before the trip and let them know you'll be flying with an animal. Each flight only has enough room for a certain number of animals, so if you don't make sure they're accounting for yours, your precious pooch or pussycat might not be able to fly with you.

Prepare Your Pet Slowly As Days Lead Up To Your Flight

You should prepare your pet slowly for your journey. Start preparing your pet about two weeks before your flight. Use the same carrier you plan on using for your trip and start easing your pet into staying in it. Put your pet in it for a short period of time, and then continuously increase the time until your pet is comfortable staying in the carrier for the entire duration of your flight.

If you feel your pet may be nervous, anxious or obnoxious to other passengers, you may want to see our veterinarian, so we're able to give you a medication for your pet to take before your departure and return to ease your pet's stress level. Make sure you have water and something to keep your pet content and occupied during the flight.
