How to Prepare for a Pet Friendly Road Trip

Tips for Preparing for a Pet-Friendly Road Trip Provided by an Etobicoke, ON Vet

Road trips are a time to venture to new places. And if your pet enjoys a car ride, you might feel obligated to bring Fido along for the trip. While it's possible, your pet can enjoy the voyage too, you might want to plan carefully to ensure your journey is a safe and happy one.

Bring Water

It doesn't take long for your pet to start to dehydrate. You could find your pet feeling lethargic and weak if he or she doesn't have water for hours. Bring a container of water and make sure you give your fluffy friend a drink break every hour or so.

Treats and Toys

You want your pet to feel content and even happy on the trek. While the new scenery is nice for your animal, keep in mind, that gets old quickly. You may want to bring toys and treats. You might want to use these as treats for good behavior on your road trip.

Take Breaks

You might have the ability to drive for hours without needing to stop to rest or take a restroom break. However, your pet is more than likely smaller than you and won't be able to handle the long trip. Not to mention, taking frequent breaks will prevent accidents in your car. Your pet will be less likely to get sick in your car when he or she gets an opportunity to get fresh air and time to rest. And your pet will be more comfortable when he or she gets opportunities to stretch and run around.

Comfort Measures

If you don't know how your pet will react to a long car ride, you might want to take comfort measures like his or her bed or favorite blanket. Even if you've traveled with your pet in the past, you still might want to take items to comfort your pet to make the trip more relaxing. Your pet will be less likely to get homesick.

Window Down

You'll want to roll down your window for at least part of your journey. The fresh air is better for your pet to breathe than the air from the air conditioner. Rolling down the windows will help prevent your pet from getting sick in the car. It'll also help your pet stay at a comfortable temperature. If you should need to stop at the store or make any other pit stops where your pet won't be able to go in, you must leave the window down part way. Ultimately, you want to leave the window down enough, so air can get in for your pet to breathe, but you don't want to leave it down enough that your pet could get out or anybody could bother your pet.

Health Certificate

If you're planning on staying in a hotel, campground or traveling out of state, your pet might need a health certificate. Make sure you plan accordingly and call anywhere you're planning on going in advance.
