What age should I start to socialize my dog?

In the past there has been a lot of debate about when to start socialization or "puppy classes".   Ideally puppies should be exposed to as many different people, animals, environments and stimuli as possible before their socialization period ends at 14 weeks of age.  The concern with this has always been exposing puppies that have not completed all required vaccines to potential diseases such as parvovirus.   Compare this to the risk of behavior problems caused by a lack of socialization including fearful behaviors and fear related aggression.

The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends that puppies start socialization about a week after their first set of vaccines and deworming (typically at 8 weeks of age).    It is important to keep up with vaccines every 3-4 weeks during the classes, until their last vaccines at 16 weeks of age.  The risk of contracting parvovirus from a puppy class is extremely low compared to the number one cause of death of dogs under the age of 3, namely behavioral problems.

Of course, owners can and should start socialization in the home even earlier than 8 weeks of age.  Handling of feet, ears, looking in their mouths all help acclimatize puppies to a typical exam in the veterinarian's office.  Positive reinforcement (rewarding desired behavior with affection and/or food) should start as soon as possible.   Owners should also wear hats, sunglasses, introduce the puppy to water and/or bathing during this period of time.
