Exams for Senior Pets

Preventative care is very important when it comes to taking care of a senior pet. Our veterinarian recommends scheduling checkups for your senior pet at least once per year. More frequent checkups may be recommended if your pet has medical conditions that warrant veterinary attention. Blood tests and a urinalysis may be given regularly. This is also the perfect time for you to discuss any changes that your pet may be experiencing with our veterinarian. Since pets age quicker than people, dramatic changes can occur in a matter of months. If your pet begins exhibiting any of the following symptoms, schedule an evaluation with our veterinarian as soon as possible.

  • Reduced appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Drooling
  • Bad breath
  • Frequent urination
  • Increased water intake
  • Increase in appetite
  • Reduction in exercises increased stiffness, and difficulty walking or jumping
  • Bloated abdomen
  • Rapid or heavy breathing
  • Coughing

At What Age Is My Pet Considered a Senior?

Senior status depends on your pet’s size and breed. Some guidelines are used to determine when a pet is considered a senior. Normally, cats aren’t considered seniors until between 11 and 14 years of age. On the other hand, dogs are considered a senior around the age of seven, although certain larger dogs may age faster. As pets age, it is common for them to experience health conditions such as arthritis, kidney disease, hearing loss, and heart disease.
