Importance of Pet Blood Testing

Blood is collected and tested at regular wellness pet exams. Having blood work competed early on helps set up a baseline for later comparison as your pet ages. As pets age, they are prone to many types of diseases and maladies. Some of the blood tests performed include:

  • Complete Blood Count (CBC): This test detects parasites, abnormal cell presence, and anemia. The test counts the presence of white and red blood cells in your pet’s blood. It can also help us understand the cause of the malady so we can treat your pet accurately.
  • Chemistry Profile: This allows us to analyze the function of major organs, such as the kidney, liver, and pancreas. We also analyze electrolyte levels, protein levels, and blood sugar levels to check for diabetes.
  • Thyroid Testing
  • Heartworm: This is a basic test that should be run on your pet annually. Heartworm can be fatal if not treated. The earlier it is detected and treated, the more positive the outcome.

Blood tests are also run when your pet is unwell and needs to be treated. For us to arrive at an accurate diagnosis, we collect and test blood. People bring their pets to our animal hospital for veterinary care when they detect illness. Signs of illness in a pet include lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, excessive urination, and blocked bowels or diarrhea.
