Pet Surgery FAQs

When pets require surgery, it’s only natural for pet owners to worry. Even routine surgeries pose a risk to your pet. At Concord Veterinary Clinic, we understand your concern and will ensure you are well informed about any surgical procedures your pet needs. These FAQs from our Concord, CA, veterinarian provide greater insight into pet surgical treatments.

.

Will my pet be sedated for the surgery?

Most surgeries require that pets be sedated to keep them still and comfortable during the procedure. Your pet will feel no pain under anesthesia and your surgeon will be able to work without worrying about harming your pet. Your kit or pup will be monitored the entire time he is under anesthesia to ensure he is well.

How do I prepare my pet for surgery?

Before scheduling surgery, our veterinarian will explain the procedure in full so you fully understand what to expect. Your pet also shouldn’t have any food at least 12 hours before surgery (water, however, is okay) and he should be kept as calm as possible before bringing him in.

What kinds of surgeries are performed on pets?

Pets undergo a wide range of surgical procedures to protect or restore their health. These include tumor removal, dental surgeries, surgery to repair broken bones, orthopedic surgeries, spay/neuter procedures, and emergency surgeries that can help save your pet’s life.

What can I expect after my pet’s surgery?

For routine or simple surgeries, we may release your pet the same day to recover within the comfort of his own home. For complex surgeries, our veterinarian may recommend keeping your pet in our clinic overnight to monitor his health and ensure there are no complications from the procedure.

How do I help my pet recover from surgery?

When your pet is ready to go home, our vet will provide you with written instructions for his home care. Your pet may need to take medications during recovery or pain pills to keep him comfortable during the healing process. We’ll explain how to keep the wound clean, how to handle your pet during recovery and may recommend changes to his diet to help him heal. If you have any questions or concerns about your pet after surgery, we’re only a phone call away. We’re more than happy to help with your pet’s recovery.
