Pet Dehydration and Heatstroke

Pets can easily lose vital moisture and fluids in the warmer months, through exercise, and by not drinking enough water. This can lead to dehydration and the even more serious (potentially fatal) condition of heatstroke. Both conditions can result in serious consequences such as seizures, organ damage, and swelling of the brain. It is vital to keep your pet well hydrated at all times. At Suburban Veterinary Clinic in Maple Heights, our skilled medical team can treat both pet heatstroke and dehydration in our comfortable, state-of-the-art facility.

How to Prevent Dehydration and Heatstroke in Pets

You can greatly reduce your pet's chances of developing dehydration and heatstroke by taking a few key preventative steps. First, ensure that your pet has access to fresh water at all times, especially if they spend extended time outdoors. If you notice your pet hasn't had a drink for a while, it's important to encourage them.

Next, on particularly hot days, limit your pet's time outside. Keep walks to about ten minutes during the cooler parts of the day, and be sure to take along a bottle of water and a portable bowl for your pet if you're going for an extended walk. Pets can quickly become dehydrated in temperatures above 70 degrees, so check the weather before heading out. If you're staying outside with your pet, ensure they have a grassy, shaded area in which to sit, and keep them off the pavement as much as possible.

When indoors, provide an elevated bed that's in a cool, well-ventilated room for your pet to rest in. Remember that if you're hot and uncomfortable, so is your pet. So, turn on the air conditioner, put on a fan, and even get them a cool cloth.
