Pet Diabetes Awareness

Pets that have this disease cannot produce or use insulin in their body properly. When sugar is not converted into energy it leaves your cat or dog tired and lacking energy.  About 1 out of every 300 adult dogs and 1 out of every 230 adult cats develop diabetes.  This disease can lead to other serious health problems when not treated properly. At Suburban Veterinary Clinic in Maple Heights we believe in treating pet diabetes year-round. Signs that your pet has diabetes are, sleeping more than usual, drinking large amounts of water, cloudy eyes, thinning hair, increased urination, and increased appetite.

Diagnosing Diabetes in Dogs and Cats

Older dogs and cats are more likely to develop diabetes. Dogs and cats are given routine blood and urine test to diagnosis diabetes. Once the vet has the results they will often try diet and exercise first and then prescribe insulin injections that must be administered by needle through the skin. Most oral medications for diabetes have not proved successful so insulin injections are usually recommended.

Diet, Exercise and Insulin Injections.

Diet is a very important part of treating diabetes in dog and cats.  Cats should have a diet high in protein and low in carbohydrates and dogs should have foods that have high fiber and complex carbs to slow down their digestion. Avoid foods with too much sugar and don't feed table scrapes. Our office sells high quality dog and cat food suited for diabetes already prepared and ready to serve your pet. Dry and canned cat and dog food are prepared scientifically for diabetes and are high in protein with little grain. Prepared pet food provides your pet with the right nutrients and vitamins they need for their illness.  Freeze dried treats are usually all meat and can be broken into small treats. Our office sells a variety of diabetic dry and canned foods for both dogs and cat.

Exercise is important to your dog to manage diabetes. Walking them outside or playing with them in the yard provides exercise. Check with our veterinarian about the best exercise for your pet. Cats also need exercise, letting them play inside with toys or outside in a fenced yard regularly helps manage diabetes. Feed pets twice or three times a day and provide fresh water with their meal.

Insulin Injections for Dogs and Cats

Insulin injections are often a part of treatment for your pets to control diabetes. There are several types of insulin and the vet can help you choose the best one and show you how to administer it. With diet and exercise your pet may only have to be on insulin injections a short time.
