What is Bordetella?
The Bordetella vaccine is a non-core vaccine given to help prevent kennel cough. This is because Bordetella bronchiseptica is the most common bacterial agent responsible for this condition.
Bordetella bronchiseptica causes inflammation of the pet's upper respiratory tract and leads to coughing and illness. This also leaves the pet susceptible to contracting secondary infections. Many veterinarians and canine professionals refer to this disease as kennel cough, which can leas to confusion as to what this vaccine is for.
Why Does My Pet Need Bordetella?
Kennel cough is highly contagious. Your dog is considered at high risk if they go to dog parks, boarding facilities, dog daycare, or attends training classes or dog shows. Many of these facilities require proof of vaccination before they are allowed on the premises. Pets that are considered at high risk should get the Bordetella vaccine annually, and some facilities requires the vaccine every 6 months.
