YOUR PET’S EYES DESERVE SPECIAL CARE

#

Because you spend far more time with your cat or dog, you may notice that something is not right before we do. Eye problems may seem to begin suddenly or you might notice changes in your pet’s behavior gradually. These changes and symptoms may include:

  • Avoiding light
  • Eyes bulging or closed
  • Cloudiness
  • Discharge
  • Excess watering of one or both eyes.
  • Redness
  • Sneezing, coughing, drooling with eye redness
  • Rubbing the eye
  • Rubbing his or her face on the ground

Porter Pet Hospital can help. An accurate diagnosis means that we can begin the appropriate treatment right away. Some of the more common eye problems include:

  • Cataract
  • Corneal ulcer
  • Inflammation indicating infection
  • Eyelid abnormality
  • Injury
  • Irritation
  • Pink eye or conjunctivitis

Some viral and bacterial infections, for example, can result in an inflammation of the pink membrane on the inside of the eyelids and around the eye. Generally called conjunctivitis, sometimes this infection can lead to disease of the cornea. The same infection can make the nose, lungs, and tongue inflamed.

When your pet’s veterinarian has determined what the eye problem is, he or she will begin treatment right away. This may include flushing it, removing a foreign body from the eye, or prescribing medication that will cure the infection or alleviate the underlying cause, such as increasing tear production.

For some conditions, such as cataracts, surgery may be an option. We will always discuss the choices with you, taking into account the risks, rewards, and recovery responsibilities you will have.
