1. Signs of Cold Exposure and Frostbite- stiff muscles or scaling skin, shivering, dilated and fixed pupils, shock, low pulse, low respiratory rate, subnormal body temperature (hypothermia), hair loss, skin feels leathery.
2. Handle animal very carefully and gently. Move to warm place immediately.
3. Do not rub frozen or frostbitten tissue.
4. Call veterinarian right away. Tell them what happened and when. Tell them how long it will take you to get there.
5. Cover animal with blankets and place cloth covered hot packs next to animal and transport to veterinarian immediately.
6. Bring animal to veterinarian even if its body temperature returns to normal. Frostbite and cold exposure can cause skin tissue to die and has a high fatality rate.
