If your animal was hit by a vehicle...
1. Wait until roadway is clear to go to their assistance.
2. Be cautious! Even though your pet would never bite you under normal circumstances, they may be in shock and not recognize you.
3. Check mouth and nose, note if there is any bleeding, vomiting or trouble breathing.
4. If animal is apprehensive, injured or trying to bite, muzzle before handling, but do NOT muzzle if the pet is having trouble breathing.
5. If able, let pet get up. If unable, use a stiff piece of plywood or cardboard (anything that will take weight) as a makeshift stretcher to move the animal out of the roadway.
6. Keep animal calm and restrict movement.
7. Call veterinarian immediately to let them know what happened and how long it will take you to get there.
8. Go to veterinarian immediately! Being hit by a car can result in chest injuries, broken bones, skin abrasions, concussions, open wounds, internal bleeding, internal organ damage and/ or shock.
