Pet Dental Care

Comprehensive Dental Care for Your Pets

One area that a lot of pet owners overlook is the oral health of their pet.

Unfortunately, this can cause problems for your pet in the form of tartar build-up, bad breath and, in some cases, tooth decay and tooth loss.

A common question pet owners have is: should I really brush my pet's teeth? The answer is YES! Your pet's teeth are just like your teeth, meaning they're very important and, if not cared for properly, can cause pain, foul odors and even systemic disease.

Warning signs that your pet may have dental issues...

  1. Persistent bad breath.
  2. Red, swollen or bleeding gums.
  3. Pain in the mouth indicated by a reluctance to chew.
  4. Dropping food.
  5. Teeth chattering.
  6. Unwillingness to play with objects using the mouth.

If your pet exhibits one or more of these warning signs, it's important to have your pet checked by a veterinarian who utilizes the latest tools and has training in pet dental care. And since most pets do not show signs of dental issues until problems are occuring, it's important to have an annual dental check-up with your vet.

We at Park Animal Hospital and Wellness Center utilize a two part system for dental care:

  1. Prevention of plaque, tartar, gingivitis and infection.
  2. Treatment of dental, periodontal and oral disease.

Prevention: At Park Animal Hospital & Wellness Center, our team of veterinarians and technicians will assist you in choosing the right oral hygiene preventatives (treats, foods, water additives, toothbrushes, toothpastes and oral gels). We will help you figure out which preventatives work best for your pet and your busy life. We will train you in using these preventatives to avoid oral pain and infection for your pet. It's always best to practice preventative care when it comes to the teeth of your pet, just like you do with your own teeth.

Treatment: Just what is involved in a dental cleaning? A dental cleaning involves many steps from the thorough examination to polishing your pet's teeth. First, we thoroughly examine your pet, identifying the dental problems as well as any other health concerns. We perform blood work to analyze the function of your pet's liver, kidneys and blood cells, important information to know before any drugs are given. We use the safest anesthetics possible to reduce risk to your pet while under anesthesia.

We then ultrasonically scale away plaque and tartar, x-ray your pet's teeth and jaw to identify deeper concerns, perform oral surgery to extract teeth or remove oral tumors, thoroughly polish the tooth surfaces, apply dental sealants to reduce further plaque and tartar formation, and create an oral health plan for your pet. We provide TLC to your pet while recovering from anesthesia and send him home by the end of the day.
