What To Do If Your Pet Has An Emergency

Pet Emergencies With Your Troutdale Veterinarian

pet emergencies

An emergency can happen to anyone in your family, including your pets. Here are a few things you should know so you're prepared in the unlikely event your dog or cat experiences a health crisis:

Stay Out Of Danger

As quickly and as carefully as you can, get your animal away from the busy street, away from the water or electrical cords, away from another aggressive or wild animal, or away from any other source of potential harm.

Call our Troutdale veterinarian team

As soon as you and your pet are out of harm's way, give our Troutdale veterinarian team a call. We can talk you through what to do, including how to help your animal and when/if you should bring her in to see us.

Bring your animal to an emergency veterinarian immediately in the most urgent situations

You should bring your animal to a vet ASAP if you witness or suspect to be witnessing any of the following health problems:

  • Frank trauma (including falls, being hit by a car, being bitten by an animal, accidental electrocution, falls from a height, etc.)
  • Seizures
  • Respiratory distress (wheezing, coughing, choking)
  • Toxin exposure and/or ingestion
  • Distended abdomen or sudden abdominal pain (often a sign of bloat, a life-threatening complication often experienced in large breed dogs)

You can still call our animal hospital from the road to let us know you're coming, but please remember to drive carefully and pay attention to the road: we don't want anyone else, including you, getting hurt!

Use caution when handling your sick or injured pet

Even the most gentle animals can act aggressively when they are hurt or sick. If you need to pick up your animal, consider wrapping him or her in a towel first, and avoid putting your hands near your pet's mouth.

Common Pet Emergencies Treated By Our Troutdale Emergency Veterinarian Team

In addition to the above urgent conditions, our Troutdale emergency veterinarian team also can help your pet suffering from lethargy, eye and ear problems, parasite-borne illnesses, urinary difficulty, and labor-related complications.
