How You Should Prepare Your Pet Before Surgery

Pet Surgery From Our Troutdale Veterinarian

pet surgery

At Paws & Claws Pet Medical Center, our Troutdale veterinarian understands just how stressful it can be to learn that your cat or dog needs surgery of any kind. Fortunately, you can rest assured that your pet is in good hands with our pet surgeon and state-of-the-art facilities. If your pet is scheduled for an upcoming surgery at our Gresham animal hospital, there are some things you need to know.

What to Expect Before Dog or Cat Surgery

Your dog or cat will need to have some blood work done prior to surgery; this blood work is important in making sure that anesthesia is used safely on the day of your pet's procedure. Depending on your pet's specific procedure, your vet may also instruct you to prevent your pet from eating in the approximately 24 hours prior to the surgery. This is another important factor in making sure anesthesia can be administered safely, so always follow the vet's orders here.

Preparation Tips From Our Pet Surgeon

There are also some steps you can take at home to help prepare your pet come the day of surgery. If your pet takes any medications, ask your vet if you should give them to your pet on the day of surgery; you may be advised to skip a day. If your pet will need to be confined away from other pets upon coming home, now is also a good time to set up a special room or comfy crate for your pet.

On the day of your pet's surgery, our team will run a physical exam and run any additional testing required before beginning anesthesia. We will carefully review your pet's care plan with you so you know exactly what to expect as well.
