What Is a Microchip?

A microchip is very small, about the size of a grain of rice. A veterinarian can implant this small electronic device under the animal's skin, between its shoulder blades. It doesn't contain the owner's actual information; it has a unique identification number that can be read by a special microchip scanner. The number along with the owner's contact information is recorded in a special microchip database that is accessible by humane societies, animal shelters, and vet offices.  If the owner moves or changes phone numbers, he or she simply needs to update the information in the database and a there is no need to insert an updated chip.

Why Should I Schedule a Vet Appointment for a Microchip?

Your vet understands your desire to keep your pet safe. Not so long ago the best way to identify a lost pet was a personalized collar. Of course, the problem with a collar is that the pet can slip out of it and render it useless. Because a microchip is embedded under the animal's skin, it is impossible for the animal to lose it.  Another benefit is that any veterinarian or humane society can scan for the chip and obtain the owner's information to facilitate a quick and safe return of a lost pet.

Even if your dog or cat is strictly an inside animal, you should still seriously consider a microchip. Even indoor animals sometimes get brave and venture outdoors. All it takes is a door left open in error for an animal to escape, become scared, and possibly get lost. With a microchip, this animal can be identified and returned.

If you have any questions about pet microchipping, our veterinarians at Paws and Claws Pet Medical Center would be happy to help you. Contact us at 503-661-1833 to schedule a consultation or an appointment for a microchip.
