Euthanasia FAQ

Euthanasia FAQ

Euthanasia is a very difficult decision that pet owners may have to face. Your pet's healthcare team at Power Road Animal Hospital are here to help you through the process.

How Do You Know When It’s the Right Time?

There is no one answer for this question however, you know your pet better than anyone and know what is 'normal' behavior for him. When you notice your pet is unable to live a good quality of life, when he is unable to do things that make him happy, it is time to talk to your veterinarian.

How Do You Prepare for Euthanasia?

Allow time for your family to say goodbye while at home; that is where your pet is most relaxed and content. If your pet has a favorite treat or you have something he would find tasty, feel free to bring it with you to the appointment. For this visit, there are absolutely no dietary restrictions. When you bring your pet to the hospital, you will be escorted directly into a private exam room.

What Is the Process of Euthanasia?

Most pet parents choose to be present for euthanasia. Your pet will be brought to the treatment room where an IV catheter is placed, then he will be returned to you. The IV catheter is for administration of the medication. If needed, a sedative will be administered to make him feel relaxed. The euthanasia solution is administered through the IV line. It works very quickly and is completely non-painful.

What Happens after Euthanasia?

Most people choose to have their pet cremated. Some people choose to have their pet's ashes returned to them, while others do not. A memorial service or burial is also an option.
